The 4 year Bachelor of Psychology program is offered at both the Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses and is oriented towards students seeking a career as a psychologist. Students will cover all relevant fields of psychology at basic and advanced levels including the following main disciplines: developmental, social, personality, abnormal behaviour, learning and motivation, psychobiology, health, cognition, perception, organisational, research methods (including statistics) and psychometric testing. Some non-psychology electives may be taken in the early years.
Graduates with a background in psychology are employed by a wide variety of bodies, including community and government organisations, schools and other educational institutions, hospitals and community health centres, commercial organisations, and private practices. They are employed in positions involving research, project management, human resource management, advising on organisational practices, training, vocational guidance, child protection, counselling, clinical and neuropsychological assessment and treatment, and a number of other areas.
In the 4th year of the program students embark on an intensive project aimed at developing rigorous skills in research design and application in a specialist area. Students are guided through the project by academic staff in the school whom are experts in the students project field.
Clinical Psychology
The Master of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Clinical and Health Psychology, are professional postgraduate programs that provide students with the practical experience and theoretical background that will prepare them for careers as clinical or health psychologists. Through high level coursework, students develop a research project in an area of clinical or health psychology of their interest. Practical experience is gained through supervised placements undertaken throughout the Newcastle at the School of Psychology Clinic that prepare graduates for the roles of Clinical and Health Psychologists. The programs also allow students to attain provisional registration and develop rigorous practical research skills that can be applied throughout a student’s career.
The school of Psychology also offers student’s seeking a career as an academic or research psychologists a traditional three year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) as well as a unique Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PhD) that encompasses both practical experiences and traditional research.
Entry into the Clinical programs is competitive and limited. All applications must be submitted in conjunction with a professional portfolio that is to be sent directy to the University. Guidelines for portfolio submission.
