What is the difference between the Graduate Certificate and the Masters of Aviation Management?
The Graduate Certificate of Aviation Management is an entry strategy for those who are not able to meet the criteria for entry at the Master's level. If students in the Graduate Certificate pass their courses they can 'upgrade' to the Master's program. The Graduate Certificate is also an early exit strategy for people who find the program rather difficult and want to have something to show for what they have managed to complete, without doing the full Masters program. Students do not get both qualifications. The Graduate Certificate requires completion of four courses and the Masters requires eight.
Is there a way to come to Australia to take the program?
No. The program is designed to be taken on-line and there are no equivalent face-to-face courses on campus. In addition, the program does not have a CRICOS code, which is required to get a student visa. However, if you are coming to Australia as a tourist or on business, you are welcome to come to the University of Newcastle and meet with the program and Graduate School staff.
Is there any financial help for students taking the program?
If you are an Australian citizen you may be eligible for the FEE-Help Scheme. Follow this link! There are currently no University of Newcastle scholarships for this program. There may be programs in your home country (if you are not Australian) that would assist you, but you will have to find that out for yourself. Your organisation may also be willing to help with fees or time to study, you should ask your human resources staff what may be available.
How do I get admission to the program?
An Admission Points system is used for determining entry to the Master of Aviation Management and Graduate Certificate of Aviation Management. The Admission Points are based on your qualifications and experience. You need 100 points to enter the Masters program and 60 points to enter the Graduate Certificate. There is a table that explains the admission points in the Program link. You do get points for any undergraduate (Bachelors) degree that you have, but you do not have to have an undergraduate degree to enter the programs. Aviation related qualifications will count for admission points, so if you have an ATPL, LAME or an ATC licence then you will gain some admission points. Years of experience in aviation related employment also count towards admission points. You will find the application for admission forms on the Gradschool.com.au web site.
How long will it take to get the Degree?
It depends on how many course you take in each trimester. Most people who are also working full time find that one course at a time is quite enough, although some manage two at a time. If you can take two courses each trimester, and the courses you want to take are offered in convenient trimesters, the minimum time to complete is four trimesters - or one and one-third years. If you take one course at a time, then it will take you eight trimesters, or two and two third years. You will need to plan ahead because most courses are only offered once each year, and sometimes the trimester of offer changes.
Can I take a break from the program if my workload changes?
Generally you can take a trimester or two off from study if you have already successfully completed at least one course. We try to be flexible, as we recognise the fluctuation in workload that can occur in the industry.
