Areas of Study
Why study with us?
We offer several Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited courses which lead to degree programs in psychology at our Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses.
We provide specialised courses in psychology over four years leading to a Bachelor of Psychology. This degree program is orientated towards students seeking a career as a psychologist and entry is limited and highly competitive. You may also choose to undertake a program of study in psychology through either one of the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Science degrees, depending on your individual requirements and interests. Graduates of these degrees may also be eligible to apply for a 4th year APAC accredited program in psychology, either through an honours degree in psychology or through the Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
Provisional Registration
Study in psychology will provide you with eligibility for provisional registration as a psychologist. Full registration can then be achieved either through a further two years supervised training or a Masters Degree. The Graduate Diploma in Psychology will also allow graduates of non-psychology degrees to complete the first three years of the APS accredited sequence in order to become eligible for a 4th year APAC accredited program.
Professional Psychology
For students seeking a career as a professional psychologist we offer a two-year Masters program in Clinical Psychology or three-year Professional Doctorate programs in Clinical Psychology and combined Clinical and Health Psychology. These programs will provide students with dedicated coursework together with extensive clinical placement and research experience, preparing our graduates for careers as clinical or health psychologists.
Placements
Placements are offered through the Psychology Clinic and with conjoint academic staff who are practicing psychologists in Hunter, New England and North Sydney Area Health Services as well other health organisations and private practices.
Academic and Research Psychology
For students seeking a career as an academic or research psychologist, we offer the traditional research-only three year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in several areas of research strength within the School of Psychology. The school has a strong and expanding research focus, with a range of internationally recognised research projects funded by national and international competitive funding bodies.
Staff Expertise
Our staff have considerable expertise in postgraduate research supervision in several important fields of psychological research, including, Neuroscience, Social, Vision, Audition, Cognitive, Biological, Health, Clinical, Personality, Neuroimmunology and Experimental Psychology.
