Community Engagement
The University of Newcastle has identified university community engagement as a central strategic priority. The key focus is on enriching and developing the University's communities of interest (both internal and external) through mutually beneficial activity that adds value to the teaching, learning and research activity of the University.
Relay For Life
Hastings Relay for Life is an annual event to raise funds for the Cancer Council of NSW. Relay for Life is the world's largest fundraising activity for cancer that welcomes participants to celebrate survival, remember those lost and fight back through personal pledge to beat cancer.
In 2011, The University of Newcastle's, Port Macquarie campus, registered two teams for the event, comprising; 7 students, 6 staff, 1 alumni and 8 additional family and friends. A large proportion of the funds raised locally are returned through local projects, such as Rotary Lodge, research and education programs for those affected by cancer. Photo gallery
International Nurses Day
International Nurses Day is an annual celebration held between 6 May and 12 May to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. Each year, the International Council of Nurses chooses a theme for International Nurses Day discussions. The theme for 2011 was Closing the gap: increasing access and equity.
In 2011 the School of Nursing and Midwifery held a fund raising BBQ complete with Thai and Indian food and nibbles. All money raised from a gold coin donation was presented to the Cancer Council in conjunction with Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Photo gallery
