Blackwell Publishing Prize ($100 book voucher provided by Blackwell Publishing)
Prize to be awarded annually to the student graduating from the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who in the final two years of the program demonstrated the highest overall ability and capacity in the Year 4 written examinations (Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Reproductive Medicine) and the Year 5 written examinations (Oncology/Palliative Care OSCEs).

The Australian Medical Association - (NSW) Ltd Prize ($500 cheque plus certificate)
Prize to be awarded to a student graduating from the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who demonstrates the highest overall ability and capacity in the Year 4 Long Cases (Paediatrics, Medicine and Surgery), the Year 4 Reproductive Medicine Clinical OSCE, the Year 5 Medicine Long Case and Clinical OSCEs (Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry) and the Year 5 Longitudinal Task.

The Andrew Lawson Memorial Prize in Oncology ($500)
Prize to be awarded annually to the student being a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who demonstrated the highest overall ability and capacity in the Year 5 Oncology assessment instruments as nominated by the appropriate Year 5 course co-ordinator.

Welch Allyn Diagnostic Set Prize (Welch Allyn 3.5 halogen diagnostic set valued at approximately $1,000)

Prize to be awarded to students enrolled in Year 3, Year 4 or Year 5 of the Bachelor of Medicine who completes the best essay written in addition to the curriculum requirements, in the fields of eye, ear, nose and throat, if of sufficient merit. The essay should address a current community problem with a critical review of appropriate clinical evidence. The essay shall not be less than 1000 words, nor more than 2000 words.

Carl Mason Memorial Prize ($350)
The Carl Mason Memorial Prize was established in 1992 to preserve the memory of Carl who was tragically killed in a road accident whilst driving home from his technical training course. Carl suffered from diabetes but carried the burden of his illness lightly. The objective of this prize is to further the understanding amongst young doctors in training of the complexities of diabetes management in young people, so that they will be better equipped to service families in which a child has diabetes.

Prize to be awarded annually to the student(s) submitting the best Longitudinal Report; or Primary Health Care Selective Report and/or Bachelor of Medical Science proposal in the field of diabetes in children:

  1. Year 5 Bachelor of Medicine students who submit a Longitudinal Report in the field of diabetes in children. Groups must submit the Report to the Year 5 Manager to be considered for award of this prize. The prize will be shared equally among group members; or
  2. Year 5 Bachelor of Medicine student who submits a Primary Health Care Selective Report undertaken in the field of diabetes in children. Reports must be submitted to the Year 5 Manager to be considered for award of this prize; and/or
  3. being a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Medical Science who submits the best proposal as part of the requirements for that degree in the area of diabetes in children; if of sufficient merit.

A student who has been awarded the Prize shall not be eligible to be considered for its award a second time.

Steele Douglas Prize in Pathology ($350)
Prize to be awarded annually to the Year 5 Bachelor of Medicine students who achieve the highest overall mark for either the Longitudinal Report in the field of pathology or Quality in Health Care Project in the field of pathology, if of sufficient merit. The Prize shall be shared equally among group members. Groups must submit the Report to the Year 5 Manager to be considered for award of this prize.

Margaret Auchmuty Prize for Women Medical Students ($150)

Prize to be awarded annually to the female student being a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who completes the best report in either the Year 3 Health Equity Selective in Aboriginal health, or the Year 5 Primary Health Care Selective in Aboriginal Health; if of sufficient merit. A student who has been awarded the prize shall not be eligible to be considered for its award a second time.

The Linda and John James Gentle Mother and Son Prize in Paediatrics ($350)
Prize to be awarded annually to the student being a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who in Year 4 of the program demonstrated the highest overall ability and capacity in the rotation of paediatrics (Long case and Written exam) in addition to demonstrating an aptitude and enthusiasm for paediatrics in tutor and supervisor reports during the paediatric course.

Andrew Lojszczyk Prize ($500)
Awarded annually to the student graduating from the degree of Bachelor of Medicine who in the final two years of the program demonstrated the highest overall ability and capacity in clinical performance in surgery (including Year 4 Long Case, Year 4 Clinical Supervisor's Report and Year 5 Emergency Department/Orthopaedics/Surgery assessment instruments as nominated by the appropriate Year 5 course co-ordinator), if of sufficient merit.

Hunter Postgraduate Medical Institute (HPMI) Health Equity Selective Prize (2 x $500)
The prize will be awarded annually to the two students with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in the Health Equity Selective Report. The report is a requirement of the Health Equity Selective course (MEDI3014) undertaken in Year 3 of the Bachelor of Medicine program. The Health Equity Selective Committee will nominate the top 8 reports submitted (2 from each Health Equity Rotation). All students who submit a satisfactory report and who are current members of HPMI are eligible for consideration. The selection committee listed will make the final decision re the allocation of the two prizes.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) Women's Health Award ($500)
This prize may be awarded in 2007, however, confirmation will not be available until November. If awarded, the prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the summative assessments in reproductive medicine in year 4 of the Bachelor of Medicine Program.

Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine Prize ($1,000)
(External Prize - available to Years 3, 4 and 5)

The prize is offered for excellence in occupational medicine and is awarded for the best essay or research project written in the fields of occupational and environmental health. Any topic in the fields of occupational health and safety, occupational disease and injury, or occupational medicine practice is acceptable.

Quality in Health Care Project (Medi 5014 – Surgery/Emergency Medicine)
(This is an external prize which may be awarded in 2007, however, confirmation will not be available until November.)
The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, ACHS, accredits hospitals in Australia , reports on multiple clinical indicators to hospitals and grants awards to quality improvement projects that are submitted each year. The ACHS publishes the results of the quality awards submitted by hospitals. ACHS offers an award for the best student project and a cash prize. The projects have to be submitted by October 2007 in order to meet the publication deadlines, and hence the fourth rotation in 2006 and the first three in 2007 can be submitted for 2007. If your group would like to submit their project for the award, please indicate this on your report.
