Hunter Clinical School

The Hunter Clinical School is the largest of the five clinical schools of the Joint Medical Program (JMP). It incorporates John Hunter Hospital/Royal Newcastle Centre, John Hunter Children's Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital, Belmont District Hospital and the Maitland Hospital. Learning is further enhanced with simulated clinical environments in the Chameleon Centre. Training in primary care is provided in collaboration with Divisions of General Practice and General Practice Training organisations.

The Hunter Clinical School provides two thirds of the clinical placements for the JMP in Years 4 and 5, as well as clinical learning sessions for students in the first three years of the medical program.

John Hunter Hospital

The John Hunter Hospital is the principal referral centre and a community hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Northern New South Wales. It is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside of the Sydney Metropolitan Area, and has the busiest emergency department in the state. John Hunter is the region's largest hospital with 550 adult beds and another 101 paediatric beds in the John Hunter Children's Hospital. The Royal Newcastle Centre opened next to the John Hunter Hospital in April 2006, providing another 144 beds. Patients from the Hunter Region and beyond are referred to John Hunter for treatment in a range of specialities, including Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Orthopaedics (elective and trauma), Cardiology and Cardiac surgery, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Nephrology, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Respiratory Medicine, and Trauma.

Calvary Mater Hospital

Calvary Mater Newcastle is a 187 bed facility and is the Hunter region's major centre for oncology (cancer) services, haematology, clinical toxicology and research. These services are supported by the intensive care unit, oncology treatment, surgery, general medicine and palliative care. While the hospital provides emergency, general medical and surgical care, it also specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases, breast cancer and melanoma. The hospital is also home to the Newcastle Melanoma Unit and Hunter BreastScreen, and has a stroke unit which provides a seamless care approach to stroke treatment and assessment for people of the Hunter.

The Maitland Hospital

The Maitland Hospital is a health facility for the Upper and Lower Hunter regions and serves the cities and towns of Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Dungog and Raymond Terrace. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of services including medical, rehabilitation, surgical, mental health, dental, renal, maternity and child services, a coronary care/ high dependency unit and a 24-hour emergency department.

Belmont Hospital

Belmont Hospital provides a range inpatient and outpatient health care services to the population of Lake Macquarie. These services include general medicine, general surgery, day surgery, coronary care, gynaecology and a 24-hour emergency department. A range of allied health and diagnostic services are also provided including physiotherapy, social work, dietetics, speech pathology, occupational therapy, pathology and radiology.
