Why did you choose to study Mathematics at Newcastle?
After studying in a different area for a year it became evident a career in this field would not be fulfilling to me. During my first year I was exposed to many academic faculties and realised that studying maths would not only be satisfying but also stimulating. My change of degree also had me changing my career path and even though I have since pursued academia the B.Maths degree opens up more career opportunities than the other degree ever could.

Where are you currently working and what are you currently doing?
I am currently working as a mathematics tutor at the University of Newcastle and at Fiona Young Tuition Centres, as well as completing my Masters degree in mathematics.

What was the best thing about your degree program?
The program allowed the study of both Pure and Applied maths with the subject choices covering many different facets of maths, such as Functional Analysis, Number Theory and Fractals. The degree also allowed additional courses to be chosen from across the University enabling concurrent study of both maths and a secondary subject area such as computing.

How has your mathematics degree helped you in your professional life?
My maths degree enabled me to find employment at the University and in the private sector as a maths tutor. It also enabled me to continue my studies by completing a Bachelor of Mathematics (Hons) and pursue postgraduate research.

What advice would you give to future students considering studying Mathematics at Newcastle?
Anyone with an interest in maths should consider this degree. Although the course is very demanding and requires 3 years full-time commitment it exposes you to the maths necessary for careers in engineering, computing, education and the sciences. This diversity opens up many avenues for the pursuit of a rewarding career.
