Bachelor of Science (Photonics)
Why did you choose to study Photonics at Newcastle?
Newcastle Uni was chosen due to it being the closest university to my home town which offered physics degrees, as well as the cheaper living costs than Sydney. Great lifestyle: good weather and close proximity to the beach.
What was the best thing about your degree program?
Small classes allowed a close knit network between students and academic staff. It was also mentally stimulating and challenging, but rewarding in a supportive environment.
How did you find the support and service of staff at the University?
In general all staff were very supportive and friendly to all students.
Where are you currently working and what are you currently doing? How did your Science (Photonics) degree help you in your professional life?
I am currently working for Woodside Energy in Perth as a graduate geophysicist. My degree was extremely valuable with regards to teaching me to think about problems/issues in a methodical and logical manner, but more importantly to go on and find possible solutions. Also a large mathematical grounding and understanding of physical concepts (physics) was pivotal in me being offered the position I now hold.
What advice would you give to future students considering studying Science at Newcastle?
P's might make degrees but good grades will give you many opportunities so that you can choose a great job for yourself at the end of the degree with a lot of flexibility/variety in your options. However make sure you have a great work/life balance by participating in as much as you can on every day of your life! Never be afraid to ask for help from staff or your peers :-)
