MEDICAL PHYSICS GROUP
About the Medical Physics Research Group
The Medical Physics Research Group is a collaboration between physicists at the Radiation Oncology Department, Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital and the University of Newcastle. The major research interests of the group include patient dose verification with imaging devices, MRI-guided treatment, adapting treatments to changing anatomy and clinical trial dosimetry. We welcome enquiries from potential students, postdocs, sabbatical physicists or collaborators.
Radiation Oncology Department
The department of radiation oncology is the largest site in New South Wales, with five high-energy linear accelerators. The Hospital has recently undergone a major redevelopment. We have active clinical treatment and development programs including IMRT, HDR brachytherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, cone-beam CT, MRI. We are equipped with:
- Five Varian medical linear accelerators. All have 120 leaf MLC and amorphous silicon EPIDs. Three have on-board kV imagers and CBCT. One has stereotactic and arc-IMRT capability.
- Two larger bore multislice CT Scanners, one with 16 slice and gating capability.
- Nucletron HDR brachytherapy unit.
- Eclipse radiation therapy planning system with IMRT and arc_IMRT capability.
- PET-CT scanner (Radiology).
About Newcastle
Newcastle is approximately 2 hours drive (150 km) north of Sydney. Formerly the principal coal export port of Australia, it is now known mostly for its beaches and laid-back lifestyle. Average maximum temperatures are 17C in July and 27C in January. The Hunter Valley wine region is less than 1 hour inland, and the beautiful Port Stephens boating and recreation region 1 hour to the north.
