Mathematics
Choosing your Courses
The first year
In your first year, up to half ofthe courses you will study will be mathematics courses. Under the flexible BMath program structure, your remaining elective courses can be chosen from across the university. In the past students have chosen topics as diverse as classics, geography, law, and chemistry.
If you are studying a combined degree, such as a Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Mathematics, your electives are typically compulsory components of the other program in the combination. Each year, about three-quarters of students enrolled in a BMath or studying a Mathematics co-major in the BSc take the option of studying combined degrees.
Upper levels
As you progress through the degree, your mathematics courses become increasingly specialised, with courses covering topics such as differential equations, financial mathematics, combinatorial number theory and operator theory. These advanced courses may be organised into streams that allow for specialisation or co-majors in areas such as statistics, finance or bioinformatics.
Students with a good record in their studies are encouraged to apply for summer vacation scholarships to experience research methodology first hand.
Accelerated program
For high-achieving students with advanced mathematical skills, we offer an accelerated program within the BMath program structure. This elite program is available to students who achieve good marks in HSC Mathematics Extension 2 and score a UAI of over 95. If you are eligible, you can study second year courses in first year and potentially complete your BMath degree in five semesters instead of six.
