Why Newcastle Law School

The Newcastle Law School has a reputation for being the first in the country to incorporate practical experience within its law program. Students as early as first year are offered the opportunity to work alongside legal practitioners at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre, advising with clients from the general public with real-world legal issues. The student body at the Newcastle Law School remains relatively small, allowing students to get to know their entire year group and interact with academic staff to a greater extent in lecture and tutorials groups.

Additional support for students first in their family to go to uni and/or moving away from home

Many of our students are the first person in their family to come to law school. We welcome the diversity of our students. Many of our law school staff are also the first members of their families to study law, and can relate readily to the experiences of their students.

We know that when you first come to university, you might need some extra support. That is why we offer the following programs and support services:

  • pre-law week to help you adjust to a new town and a new learning environment
  • friendly and helpful mentors
  • law school orientation so you can get to know other students
  • skills support sessions for a little extra academic support
  • peer-assisted study support in challenging courses
  • small group teaching in first year courses
  • accessible, caring staff
  • social activities sponsored by our Law Students' Association

Over 90% of our law graduates were employed in full-time jobs within four months of graduating, which is higher that the national average.* Australian bachelor degree graduates aged less than 25 and in their first full-time employment in Australia have an annual median starting salary of $48,400.*
