Research is an important activity for members of the School, a number of whom regularly publish in leading Australian and overseas journals. Their current research interests include health law, legal education, legal history, family and welfare law, equal opportunity law, commercial law, torts, media law, trade practices law and criminal law and procedure.
The School's postgraduate students are undertaking research degrees in a number of areas including legal and ethical issues in health law, comparative law, family law and criminal law.
The Hon Justice Elizabeth Evatt AC launched the School's academic law journal, The Newcastle Law Review, in 1995. The Newcastle Law Review is published twice a year and contains articles on a range of topics from international influences on Australian law to current problems of legal practice, as well as case notes and book reviews. Its editorial board comprises eminent judges and legal academics from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and England.
The Belle Weise Chair of Legal Ethics, Professor Ted Wright, took up his appointment in 2000 and is undertaking empirical research into the Australian legal system.
