GRIT members maintain affiliations with and regularly participate annually within the following societies.

Auchmuty Library Archives and Cultural Collections

  • Cultural Collections – Auchmuty Library University of Newcastle library has special strength in religious and intellectual collections. These include the library of St. John’s College, Morpeth, relating to the Anglican diocese of Newcastle, and the bishops’ library from the Catholic diocese of Maitland/ Newcastle. The Tanner Collection has many works relating to the history, philosophy and cultural traditions of the ancient world. The Cultural Collections maintains a number of media links here: Youtube Channel, Wordpress, Twitter, Flickr

Cultural Collections

The images in this gallery are from photographs taken of original illustrations in various publications held in the Rare Books and Special Collections of the University of Newcastle Library, in particular The Bishop's Library. The Bishop's Library is a collection of books dating from 1584 that was established by the second Bishop of Maitland, Dr. James Murray (1865-1909) and substantially augmented by his successor, Dr. P.V. Dwyer (1909-1931). The Bishop's Library was donated to the University of Newcastle Library in 1997 to mark the sesqui-centenary of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland. GRIT would like to acknowledge the assistance of Gionni Di Gravio, University Archivist and Lyn Keily, Special Collections Librarian in selecting books from the Bishop's Library for this project of enriching the GRIT website.
