Arriving by plane:
If you will not have your own vehicle it is easier to get to Terrigal from Sydney rather than Newcastle, and it is also easier to fly to Sydney than to Newcastle, so I do not recommend arranging to fly in to Newcastle airport.
Once you arrive in Sydney you will need to make your way to the Central Coast, either to the accommodation site in Terrigal, or the conference venue itself in Ourimbah. I recommend using a commercial shuttle that will pick you up at the airport and take you to the door at your destination. For details of these shuttles and other travel options to the Central Coast see below.
Driving:
To the conference venue in Ourimbah: If you are coming from Sydney or other locations south of Ourimbah take the F3 Freeway north from Sydney. Take the exit signed for Ourimbah and turn right to pass under the Freeway. Then at the second round about (at the top of the hill, with a blue sign to the university) turn left into Chittaway Rd and cross the bridge over the train line. Follow Chittaway Rd around until you reach the campus entrance (which is clearly signed).
If you are coming from Newcastle or other locations north of Ourimbah take the F3 Freeway south from the Newcastle area. Take the exit signed for Ourimbah. Then at the second round about (at the top of the hill, with a blue sign to the university) turn left into Chittaway Rd and cross the bridge over the train line. Follow Chittaway Rd around until you reach the campus entrance (which is clearly signed).
To Terrigal: If you are coming from Sydney or other locations south of the Central Coast take the F3 Freeway north from Sydney. Take the exit signed for Gosford and follow the signs to Terrigal.
If you are coming from Newcastle or other locations north of Ourimbah take the F3 Freeway south from the Newcastle area. Take the main exit signed for Gosford (with the green ‘Gosford’ sign, not the exit with the blue sign to Gosford Hospital via Ourimbah). After taking the exit, follow the signs to Terrigal.
Commercial shuttle:
Travel to the Central Coast from Sydney by public transport is difficult, particularly to Terrigal, which involves catching a train to Gosford, then changing to a local bus. I recommend instead using one of the commercial shuttle services that travel regularly between Sydney airport (and other locations in Sydney) and the Central Coast. We have an arrangement with Kings and Queens Airport Shuttle. If you mention the “Oceanic languages conference” you will receive the special rate of $40 each way. They can be contacted via their website www.kingsandqueens.com.au, by email at bookingenquiries@kingsandqueens.com.au, by phone on 1300 559 657, or by fax on +61 (0)24362 2064. They will pick up in Sydney at the international or domestic airport, and at some other locations such as some hotels. They will take you to the door at your destination on the Central Coast, and pick you up there to return to Sydney when the conference is over.
Public transport:
To the conference venue in Ourimbah: From Sydney catch a train (www.cityrail.nsw.gov.au) from Sydney Central to Wyong or to Newcastle and get off at Ourimbah. There is one train from Sydney to Ourimbah every hour, and the trip takes about one hour and 45 minutes.
From Newcastle catch a train to Sydney Central, get off at Wyong and change to an all stations train to Sydney, then get off at Ourimbah. There is one train from Newcastle to Ourimbah every hour, and the trip takes one hour and 30 minutes.
Once you get off the train in Ourimbah, exit the station on the east side (the platform side if you came from Newcastle, the opposite side across the footbridge if you came from Sydney). Then take the footbridge across the stream and turn left into Mill St (the only street you come to at this point). At the end of Mill St turn right into Shirley St then left into the campus (which is very well signed). The walk from the station takes about ten minutes.
To Terrigal: From Sydney catch a train (www.cityrail.nsw.gov.au) that goes to Wyong, Gosford or to Newcastle, and get off at Gosford. There are trains from Sydney about every 30 minutes, and the trip takes about one hour and 30 minutes. From Newcastle catch a Sydney train and get off at Gosford. There is one train from Newcastle to Gosford every hour, and the trip takes one hour and 20 minutes.
Once in Gosford station transfer to a Busways bus. (Redbus buses also leave from Gosford but they do NOT go to Terrigal.)
-
The number 67 and number 68 buses go to Terrigal.
Alternatively at Gosford catch a taxi outside the station. It takes about 20 minutes to Terrigal. The bus is cheaper but takes much longer.
