Study Abroad Students

The School of Humanities and Social Science is a natural point of connection between the University and the 'real world', by which we understand the wider world, beyond our national borders. Our students have access to a wide range of exchange schemes and international fieldwork placements. Students interested in Japan can experience its culture first hand with a trip paid for jointly by the University of Newcastle and Shohoku College; and students aiming to major in French at Newcastle may wish to round off their studies with a semester in La Rochelle, with flights and expenses paid for by the Kelver Hartley bequest program. But international travel is not limited to our Languages students; our Speech Pathology program, for example, also has developed extensive links with Vietnam.

Study Tours, Exchanges and Scholarships

The School, through its academic disciplines, has a variety of study exchange agreements and networks with a range of international universities and agencies.
For further information on the study tours and exchange programs listed below, you can attend a weekly Study Abroad Information Session:

Enhancing the International Experience of Local Students

French scholarships and study tours
Students of French have access to a range of grants and awards, including an expenses-paid semester of study in a French university. These opportunities make the French discipline at the University of Newcastle unique in Australia. As a result of the generous bequest of the French department's foundation Professor, Kelver Hartley, the discipline can offer extensive travel opportunities and study support to students. The Kelver Hartley Bequest Program includes competitive grants to ease study costs in first year, the chance to spend six months in France at the Université de La Rochelle  and study and travel support for Honours and postgraduate students.

Social Work in the Maldives
Discipline of Social Work staff have worked with the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the Maldives College of Higher Education and the Maldives Ministry of Gender and Family on developing a strategy for social service worker training and social work capacity building in the Maldives. This work is on-going, and recently three graduates were chosen to help teach a new social service worker course in the Maldives, sponsored by UNICEF. Read more
