International Activities
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is a dynamic site of learning both for international students coming in and for Australian students studying overseas. While our undergraduate courses regularly attract exchange and study-abroad students, our Coursework Masters programs (including the Masters of Applied Linguistics and the Masters of Social Change and Development) and Research Higher Degree programs are particularly popular for international students. In addition to this, our languages programs offer exchange programs throughout Europe and Asia while our Speech Pathology students have the opportunity to study in Vietnam.
The University of Newcastle highlighted the importance of internationalisation strategies in its Strategic Plan 2007-2011: Building Distinction. This website details the various ways in which the School of Humanities and Social Science is contributing to implementing this strategy.
Internationalising research, teaching & learning
The School of Humanities and Social Science is an exemplar of internationalisation. It is home to the University’s modern languages – Chinese, French, German and Japanese – and the international exchanges that go with them. Most of our academic disciplines are integrally international in terms of curricula and research. Many staff members are active researchers in the international arena, with outstanding global reputations and research links with numerous overseas institutions.
Research Centres & Groups
Many of our Research Centres and Groups have a major focus on international research and collaboration, such as the Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS); Pacific Languages Research Group and Languages Research Group. Potential Research Higher Degree candidates (PhD & MPhil) should consult the School Research Directory and the School Research Centres and Groups websites for potential supervisors and areas of staff expertise.

International Affairs Major
This interdisciplinary major offered in the Bachelor of Arts and aims to provide students with a strong understanding of all aspects of international relations, particularly in the context of policy making, religion, ethnicity and nationalism. For further details – click here
European Union collaboration
The School, via the Discipline of History, is involved in a consortium of universities funded by the European Union to enhance knowledge of, and networks with, the European Union and its member states. One outcome of this involvement has been the collaboratively developed and delivered online course HIST3730: The European Union.
Teaching in Singapore
The School’s Disciplines of Philosophy and Film, Media and Cultural Studies provide courses to support the University’s programs offered on its Singapore campus.
