Master of Applied Linguistics

Having worked in the EFL industry for seven years in Japan, I came to the Masters program with a wealth of practical knowledge but lacked a theoretical framework to justify why one methodology should be used over another. This program really opened my eyes to the complexity of language learning and gave me a fascinating look at competing theories.

The on campus students were predominantly from the Middle East and Asia, which provided a multicultural environment in which to discuss ideas and made available first hand perspectives on second language acquisition. The lecturers took a fair and balanced view of the material and did their best to allow us to reach our own conclusions as to which theory, of which there are many, had the most merit and personal meaning. In general the class sizes were small enough to allow for a personal touch from the lecturers and time was given generously when needed for out of class questions.  I would recommend the Masters in Applied Linguistics to anyone who wishes to take an in-depth look at language acquisition and its implications for both child and adult language learning.
