Bachelor of Social Work

The University of Newcastle Social Work program was fantastic!  The BSW program is delivered via an ‘experience based learning model’ which involves lots of group discussion, group work, community projects, and self directed learning. It was very much a learning-through-doing program, which since graduating and moving into the workforce as a Social Worker, has mirrored the way I go about my daily work. In completing the program I certainly felt work ready and confident in my abilities and knowledge.

The small number of students moving through the program also builds a sense of social work community and allegiance whilst at University. I am now finding this a great resource in the field.  I particularly enjoyed all three of my field placement experiences and felt well supported by the staff and field educators throughout. Some students took the challenge of completing field placements in remote and rural areas of Australia, such as Alice Springs, and came away with enviable experiences. One of my fellow students undertook her final placement in New Zealand, whereas I completed a placement in Vietnam.

The Social Work program was, and is, delivered by experienced lecturers from a diversity of fields of practice of social work. This supports students to develop well rounded practice skills and theoretical knowledge. The program is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I would recommend the program to anyone with a passion for social justice, human rights, working with people, social and/or policy development, community work or personal growth.
