General Purpose Building, Callaghan Campus (Level 2 for registration and coffee)
University of Newcastle, Callaghan Campus

Humanities’ postgraduate students of the University of Newcastle and Macquarie University are proud to present the annual NewMac Humanities Postgraduate Symposium. Postgraduates researching a diverse range of subjects in the Humanities discipline will present papers, allowing attendees a great opportunity to network and hear the exciting research taking place in our universities.

This year, the conference will be held at our University here in Newcastle, on the 25th February 2012, from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Registration cost is $15 and includes morning tea and lunch - Click here to download registration form

Call for Abstracts

Please click here to view the Call for Abstracts to see how to contact us or submit an abstract, and read about what NewMac offers and why it is so important to students. Any student is allowed to attend but only Humanities postgraduates can present--we envisage that most of the audience will be postgraduates.

Humanities postgraduates submitting an abstract should keep in mind that abstracts are due by the 23rd November 2011. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and sent to NewMac2012@gmail.com

Interpret the symposium theme, Metaphor, Translation and Paradox, however you will and according to your discipline. Abstracts will be blind judged by a peer review process and the selected speakers will be notified by Christmas.

Humanities postgraduates can present as a single presenter or as a panel. We envisage that there will be 14 single presenters, and two panels of three to four people each. Single presenters will each have a 20 minute speaking time to deliver, followed by a 10 minute question time. Each panel, of which there will be two altogether, will have a 30 minute time-slot all told.

Prizes will be awarded on the day for Best Abstract and Best Presentation.

All papers are to be academic in nature, and something like you would present at a seminar or symposium, and should be kept to 20 minutes delivery time. Presenters should keep in mind that as they are presenting to a general audience from mixed disciplines, and so should not be too specialised in their terminology-at least as far as is possible.

There will be a guest speaker at a forum for Humanities postgraduates from 12 to 1. Judges on the day will be academic staff from Universities of Newcastle and Macquarie.

We are all looking forward to a fun day, and hope you will join in.
