Film, Media and Cultural Studies

Film, Media and Cultural Studies (FMCS) courses look at the circulation of a wide range of cultural forms that shape our everyday lives, such as youth subcultures and styles, commercial television and film, or the production and consumption of pop songs and ads.

Students are encouraged to discuss their own experiences as both consumers and producers of popular culture. FMCS staff are actively engaged in contemporary research in film and cultural studies, with particular strengths in film theory, popular music, cultural policy and media technologies.

Career Opportunities

Film, Media and Cultural Studies courses equip students with detailed knowledge and a critical understanding of the role media and culture plays in contemporary societies.

Film, Media and Cultural Studies courses complement other courses in areas such as:

  • Media and sociology
  • Visual and performing arts
  • Leisure and tourism
  • Marketing
  • Information technology.

Courses within the major explore the historical, textual, political and social contexts of media and culture, with an emphasis upon practical investigation of both local and global debates.

For further information contact the discipline convenor Prof. Patrick Fuery.

Honours

The Honours program enables higher level study in Film, Media and Cultural Studies. Students selectively draw upon theories and methods from a range of areas, developing ways of thinking about culture and power in examining the practices, institutions and systems and texts of contemporary culture.

The Honours program is offered at the Newcastle campus and is available full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years). It consists of 4 courses:

  • FILM/CULT4010
  • FILM/CULT4020 (coursework and seminar program)
  • FILM/CULT4030
  • FILM/CULT4040 (individual supervision and thesis).

The Honours program is valuable in demonstrating to employers your ability to apply critical scholarship to key cultural questions, and allowing specialisation in particular skills and knowledge. Successful students also have the option of pursuing further study through the doctoral (PhD) program.
