Welcome to the School of Humanities and Social Science, at the University of Newcastle.
One of the largest Schools in the University, our academic staff actively research and teach in a wide variety of disciplines, including Classics, Community Welfare, English, Film, History, Linguistics, Media and Cultural Studies, Philosophy & Religious Studies, Politics, Sociology & Anthropology, in addition to the professional areas of Social Work, Speech Pathology and Theology.
The School has a strong international focus through its languages programs (Chinese, French, German and Japanese), international exchanges and teaching activities in Singapore, and through the Master of Social Change and Development and Master of Applied Linguistics programs.
The School also contributes substantially to prescribed courses for a range of degree programs in the wider University such as Communication, Development Studies, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences and Nursing. The School provides a full range of Undergraduate, Honours, Graduate Certificate, Coursework Masters, MPhil and PhD programs.

We deliver courses at three campuses: Callaghan, Ourimbah and Port Macquarie, and online, and regularly host conferences, public lectures and seminars as part of our community engagement initiatives.
Research programs in our School, such as Violence and Social Order, Endangered Languages, and Social Inclusion and Professional Values, are supported by The Humanities Research Institute and The Research Institute for Social Inclusion and Well-Being.
