Degree Programs

In the undergraduate degree programs, students can choose courses based on the major they wish to pursue and on their intended field of employment. A degree program is typically three years, although an additional year for the Honours Degree is also available. The fourth year provides students with an opportunity to undertake a research project and further course work.

The Earth Sciences program is flexible and allows students to follow various pathways by pursuing a major within the:

When you study Earth Science as a specialisation in the Bachelor of Science program it is possible to major in either Geology or Earth Science courses.

In the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management program, a major in Earth Sciences is undertaken by taking courses listed in the Physical Systems major.

While there are a number of courses which are common to both degree programs, there are particular core courses which need to be completed within each of the programs of study. The Earth Science courses which are core to each program of study or major are listed in the Program Handbook entries linked above.

There are a variety of other Earth Science courses which students can choose from in their major and to complete their degree program. The recommended pattern for students wishing to major in Earth Science or Geology at the University of Newcastle is outlined in the Choosing your Courses page.
