Students studying to be science teachers at high school undertake the Bachelor of Teaching /Bachelor of Science programme which can include 3 chemistry courses in 2nd year and 4 in their 3rd year as their major sequence. Bachelor of Teaching /Bachelor of Arts students training to be primary teachers can choose chemistry courses as well.

Students can also go on to a fourth Honours year in which they do a major research project. These are Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (Forensic) (Honours). Students in combined programmes can also add an additional Science Honours year to their programme.

After completing your first degree you may decide that your appetite for chemistry has been wetted to the extent of wanting to undertake a research higher degree in preparation for a career in chemistry research. The discipline of chemistry offers opportunities for MSc and PhD degrees by research. If this appeals to you the best thing to do is to discuss this with the chemistry staff members whose research field interest you the most and also to consult the Research Higher Degree web pages of the university.
