Biological Sciences
Degree Programs
Programs you would enrol in to study Biology, Biotechnology and Environmental Science and Management.
The Bachelor of Science degree offers the greatest flexibility when choosing your program of study. A Biology major in the Bachelor of Science involves the selection of a coherent set of courses from cell and molecular biology, plant biology, animal biology and ecological courses. While enabling flexibility most students select a specific career path in the second and third years of the program. Thus it is possible to construct a strong interest in specific areas such as plant biology, cell and molecular biology, animal physiology and reproduction and ecology.
The Bachelor of Biotechnology is especially designed for those students who have a particular interest in the application of biology in modern technologies. The focus of courses in this program is on molecular and cell biology subjects. Biotechnology is the harnessing of the biochemical and genetic processes of living organisms for our own use. The degree emphasizes DNA and cell technologies and their application to human health, plant and animal agriculture and the environment. Students have the opportunity to gain practical experience working in research and development facilities in industry and research laboratories within the university during their degree.
The Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management program is made up of core (or compulsory) courses, a choice of three majors with their own courses (in Living Systems, Social Systems, and Physical Systems) and course which can be taken as electives to broaden your knowledge. You will do some biology courses as part of your core for the degree and can choose biology courses as part of the Living Systems major. Biology courses can also be taken as a second or sub-major.
There are a range of other degree programs that incorporate subjects from the Biological Sciences. Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts students training to be primary or high school teachers can chose biology courses. Students studying to be science teachers at high school will do the most biology and can choose from biology and environmental courses.
The combined degree in Environmental Engineering and Science enables students to train as professionals in environmental systems with a strong understanding of the relationship between the living and non-living components of the environment.
