Engineering

A W Roberts Medallion

Value: An engraved medallion

Awarded annually to the student enrolled in a program offered by the Faculty of Engineering, who appears on the Dean's Merit List and has achieved the best overall performance/highest weighted average mark of the academic year.

Engineering Fraternity Prize

Value: $150 and an inscribed medallion or scroll (or both)

Awarded annually to the student graduating with a Bachelor degree offered in the Faculty of Engineering whose performance in the subjects comprising the final year of that degree is judged to have shown the most improvement over his or her performance in the courses comprising the remainder of the degree.

Institution of Engineers Australia (Newcastle Division) Prize

Value: $500, a certificate and a medal

Awarded annually to the student with the highest pass among the Bachelor of Engineering Honours graduands/graduates, provided that the student has been enrolled at the University of Newcastle for not less than two full academic years of the course, one of which shall have been the final year.


Chemical Engineering

Ernie Walpole Memorial Prize

Value: $500 and a certificate

The prize will be awarded annually to the group of students with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in CHEE4940 Chemical Engineering Design Project.

Hunter Water Corporation Chemical Engineering Research Project Prize

Value: $500 and a certificate

Awarded annually to the student for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in 4th year research project (CHEE4970) related to the water industry and energy.

IChemE (NSW Group) Prize

Value: $300 and a medallion

Awarded annually to the candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) whose report in the Year IV Research Project is judged by the donor or the donor's representative to be the best of those nominated, provided such report is of sufficient merit.

Ian McColl Stewart Memorial Prize

Value: $500

Awarded annually to the student with the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, in the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) degree.

Newcastle Chemical Engineering Group Prize

Value: Books to the value of $200

Awarded annually to the graduating student who, in taking the course for the first time, achieves the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the final year design project of the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) degree.

Royal Australian Chemical Institute - Industrial Chemistry Prize

Value: $500 and a medal

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in CHEE3690 Environmental Process Technology.


Civil Engineering

ASI Undergraduate Steel Design Award

Value: ASI standards book and a certificate

Awarded annually to the student with the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, in the Structural Steel Design component of the third year of the Civil Engineering degree program (CIVL 3170).

Australian Geomechanics Society Prize in Soil Mechanics

Value: $500

Awarded annually to the student undertaking a bachelor's degree in the Discipline of Civil, Surveying and Environmental Engineering with the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, in the courses CIVL2280 Geomechanics 1 and CIVL3280 Geomechanics 2.

Douglas Partners Prize for Applied Geotechnics

Value: $500

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in the final year project in the field of Geotechnical Engineering.

Douglas Partners Prize for Environmental Geotechnics

Value: $500

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in, the environmental engineering student enrolled in geotechnical strand, with the best overall performance in Geotechnical Engineering Subjects CIVL2280, CIVL3280, CIVL4201.

Engineers Australia Civil and Structural Branch Prize in Structural Engineering

Value: $250

Awarded to the student with the highest average across all structures courses being CIVL2130 (Theory of Structures 1), CIVL3180 (Theory of Structures 2, CIVL3160 (Concrete Design), CIVL3170 (Steel Design) and CIVL4521 (Structural Design Project). To be eligible the student would have completed the last of these courses in the prize year.

Mine Subsidence Technological Society Prize in Geotechnical Design

Value: $500

Awarded annually to the student(s) undertaking a bachelor's degree in the Discipline of Civil, Surveying & Environmental Engineering with the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, in CIVL4571 Geotechnical Engineering Project.

Northrop Prize in Structural Engineering Design

Value: $500 and a certificate

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in Structural Engineering 4th year design.

NSW Department of Commerce Work Experience Prize for Civil Engineering

Value: $2000

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in the Industrial Experience Report at the end of year 3 or 4 of the Civil Program or a combined degree with Civil Engineering.

Steel Reinforcement Institute of Australia Award for Concrete Design

Value: $500 and a certificate

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the course CIVL3160, Reinforced Concrete Design.

The Coffey Geotechnics Prize in Geotechnical Engineering

Value: $500

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in CIVL4201 Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.

The Tony Herzog Award

Value: A specially bound copy of the project report and a certificate

Awarded occasionally to an undergraduate student in the Discipline of Civil, Surveying and Environmental Engineering who has submitted a final year project of outstanding merit.

The Peter Kleeman Medallion

Value: An engraved medallion

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in CIVL4830 Stress and Finite Element Analysis.

Institution of Engineering Australia Civil and Structural Branch Prize in Environmental Engineering

Value: $250

Awarded annually to the Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) student who has achieved the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, on the completion of their program

Northrop Prize in Water Engineering Design

Value: $500

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in Water Engineering 4th year design.

NSW Department of Commerce Work Experience Prize for Environmental Engineering

Value: $2000

The Prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the Industrial Experience Report at the end of year 3 or 4 of the Environmental Engineering Program or combined degree with Environmental Engineering.

The Coffey Geotechnics Prize for Environmental Hydrogeology

Value: $500

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in CIVL3240 Land Surface Processes and Management and CIVL3470 Contaminant Hydrogeology.


Mechanical Engineering

Ernest J Egan Prize

Value: $100

Awarded annually to the graduating full-time student with the greatest improvement over the duration of the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) program.

Ernest Guy Smith Memorial Medallion

Value: $100, an engraved medallion and remaining interest on endowed funds

Awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with the best Final Year Project performance, if of sufficient merit, in the field of Materials.

Les Gibbs Prize for Creative Design

Value: $100

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the Creative Design component of the first course of Mechanical Engineering Design.

Materials Australasia Prize

Value: $100 and 1 year's free membership of New South Wales Branch of Materials Australia

Awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in MECH2000 level Materials course or courses.

Morison Prize in Mechanical Engineering (Junior Prize)

Value: $100

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the second course of Mechanical Engineering Design.

Morison Prize in Mechanical Engineering (Senior Prize)

Value: $100

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in completing studies in Mechanical Engineering Design.

The Daniel Clark Award

Value: $100 and a one year membership of New South Wales Branch of Materials Australia

Awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the MECH3000 and MECH4000 level courses related to Materials.


Surveying

Association of Public Authority Surveyors (APAS) Prize

Value: $1000

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit in the second year of the Bachelor of Surveying degree or a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree. The student must have studied a full time load and be enrolled in the above programs in the following year and undertaking courses which satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Surveying degree. A student can only be considered once for this prize. Any credit granted is considered in defining the eligibility for this prize.

Astley Pulver Prize for Second Year Surveyors

Value: Books to the value of $125

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the courses dealing with surveying topics in the second year of the Bachelor of Surveying degree, or the equivalent stage of a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

Board of Surveying & Spatial Information Medal

Value: an engraved medallion

Awarded annually for the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the final year of the Bachelor of Surveying, or the final stage of the part-time program.

Consulting Surveyors New South Wales Prize in Land Studies

Value: $500 and a certificate

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, on completion of Land Studies courses in the Bachelor of Surveying degree, or a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

Consulting Surveyors New South Wales Prize in Surveying Project

Value: $250 and a certificate

Awarded annually to a graduating student in the Bachelor of Surveying degree or a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree, for a project which contains significant information or developments of benefit to the profession of surveying.

Hunter-Manning Group of Surveyors Prize for the Most Improved Third Year Surveying Student

Value: Books to the value of $125

Awarded annually to the student with the most improved performance in the third year, or equivalent part-time stage, of the Bachelor of Surveying degree, or equivalent stage of a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

Hunter-Manning Group of Surveyors Prize for Outstanding Community Activities

Value: Books to the value of $125

Awarded annually to the student who has contributed most to community activities in an outstanding way in the Bachelor of Surveying degree or a combined degree, which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree. Community activities may include, but not be limited to, sporting, cultural or other extra-curricula activity..

Institution of Surveyors Australia Hunter-Manning Group Prize in Surveying

Value: Books to the value of $125

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance overall, if of sufficient merit, on completion of the Bachelor of Surveying degree, or a combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

Institution of Surveyors New South Wales Incorporated Prize in Cadastral Surveying

Value: $200

Awarded annually to the student with the best performance, if of sufficient merit, in the course SURV3930 Land Boundary Definition and enrolled in the Bachelor of Surveying or combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

John Monteath Memorial Prize for First Year Surveying

Value: $500

Awarded annually, so long as the donor makes provision for the purpose, to the student with the best overall performance, if of sufficient merit, in the first year surveying courses SURV1110 - Surveying 1 and SURV1120 Surveying 2, and enrolled in the Bachelor of Surveying or combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Surveying degree.


Scholarships

Cessnock City Council/Orica ICI Explosives R M Sheahan Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Cessnock City Council and ICI Explosives with the aim of encouraging and assisting undergraduate students from the Cessnock Local Government area to pursue academic excellence in the fields of science and engineering. The scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Dr Robert M Sheahan, a Research Associate with ICI Explosives, who made many key scientific contributions to the explosives business worldwide. Robert Sheahan was a friend and mentor to a generation of research scientists and engineers working in the field of explosives.

One scholarship will be offered valued at $1,000 per year for the minimum duration of the program.

Coal and Allied Community Trust Scholarships

These scholarships were established by the Coal and Allied Community Trust in 2006 to provide twelve (12) $5000 scholarships to be offered for first-year students from the areas of Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton, Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter. Students must be enrolled in one the Engineering disciplines including civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, mining and surveying.

Five scholarships will be offered valued at $5000 payable in a lump sum payment.

Hunter Environmental Institute Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Hunter Environmental Institute to encourage and support students in the final year of an undergraduate degree related to environmental studies. The Institute seeks to reward students who demonstrate excellence in achievement and committment in their environmental programs at the University of Newcastle. Two (2) scholarships are offered each year.

This scholarship was established by the Institution of Surveyors in 1990 to encourage and support students enrolling in a Bachelor of Surveying undergraduate degree.

1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students Scholarship

This Scholarship was established by a group of Colombo Plan Students from Singapore who studied at the University of Newcastle from 1968 within the then Faculty of Engineering. On the 40th anniversary of their first entering the University of Newcastle, and, at a very different stage of their lives, the donors have decided to establish a Scholarship. This Scholarship is to commemorate the fond and happy memories of their stay at Newcastle and to show their appreciation to the Australian and Newcastle community who helped them with their University education during their tender and formative years.

One scholarship is to be awarded annually to a 2nd year student from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.

The successful applicant may also be eligible for the 1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students (Memorial) Scholarship, valued at a further $3,300, for the following year subject to meeting academic requirements.

NSW Country Surveyors Association Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the NSW Country Surveyors Association to support a Surveying student from a rural area and to encourage them persue employment in the Surveying field in a rural area upon graduation. The scholarship recipient will be invited to take part in NSW Country Surveyors Association activities.

The scholarship provides a benefit of a total of $4000 per annum for up to three (3) years payable in a lump sum payment after the Semester One census date each year.

Jennie Thomas 'Dreams Can Come True' Environmental Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mrs Jennie Thomas to provide financial assistance to first year Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management or Bachelor of Engineering (Environment) students to help them to attain a degree and make their dreams come true.

The scholarship provides the benefit of a total of $2500 to be paid per year as a lump sum after the census date If part time study is elected, $1250 per year over six years unless the student reverts to full time study when full time conditions will apply.

Xstrata Coal Indigenous Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2009 to attract Indigenous students with good academic records and pursuing a degree in a mining related discipline (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Surveying specialisations).
