Introduction

The Telecommunications Networks Group at the University of Newcastle was established in 2000. The group works on fundamental as well as applied telecommunications networking research problems. The research has significant links with the telecommunications and emerging Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology based industries.

The main research focus of the group is in the areas of wireless network architecture and protocols, wide area cellular networks, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). The group also works on IP networks and QoS/QoE management techniques in Next Generation Networks (NGNs).

Specific application areas include M2M communications, Smart Grid communications, underwater communications and vehicular communications.
