Head of School's Welcome
Welcome to the School of Education at the University of Newcastle. As Head of School, I am proud to be building on 60 years of teacher education in the Hunter region and on the School’s fine reputation for the quality and comprehensiveness of its programs, its creative approach to teaching, and the success of its graduates. We take great pride in the quality of our teaching which has been recognised through national awards and citations for members of our staff every year since such award programs began.
The School also enjoys a strong research profile as shown by its research grants, publications and the high number of postgraduate research students. Well known current programs of research with high impact relate to the Quality Teaching model of pedagogy, values and citizenship education, examining doctoral theses, physical activity interventions for children and adolescents, and support for families of children with disabilities, among many others.
In 2008, the School began an exciting program of renewal with the appointment of a new Head of School, a new Executive team, and new directions arising from reviews of its programs and consolidation of its research efforts. Recent initiatives include a dedicated program to support Education students in their first year at university, new community engagements through a Teach Outreach program, a celebration of 60 years of teacher education in Newcastle and a new professional development initiative for the region's teachers, known as Teachers' Visit Day.
My goal is to ensure that the School is a great place in which to study and to work, characterised by social responsibility, intellectual rigour, creative energy, and warm and respectful relationships. I welcome you to the School and welcome your feedback on any aspect of our work or our website.
