Head of School's Welcome

Welcome to the School of Education at the University of Newcastle. As Head of School, I am proud to be building on more than 60 years of teacher education in the Hunter region and on the School’s fine reputation for the quality and comprehensiveness of its programs, its creative approach to teaching, and the success of its graduates. We take great pride in the quality of our teaching which has been recognised through national awards and citations for members of our staff every year since such award programs began.

The School also enjoys a strong research profile as shown by its research grants, publications, the high number of postgraduate research students, and the impact of our research locally, nationally, and internationally. Well known research activities relate to comparative and international education, equity, pedagogical reform, values and citizenship education, doctoral examination, physical activity interventions for children and adolescents, and support for families of children with disabilities, among many others.

The School is engaged in an exciting program of renewal, having made numerous new academic appointments during the past four years. We are engaging in continuous course and program improvements to ensure the preparedness of our graduates with leading edge technology, high quality curriculum, and intensive pedagogical and professional experience. Recent special initiatives include: NUTeach, a Blackboard site designed to connect teaching students to the professional community from day one of their enrolment in a teaching degree; Teach Outreach a volunteer program to expand the professional experience opportunities for students while giving back to our local communities; SSTAR, a program to support staff and students talking about their research; and, Teachers' Visit Day, a professional development initiative for the region's teachers.

My goal is to ensure that the School is a great place in which to study and work, characterised by social responsibility, intellectual rigour, creative energy, and warm and respectful relationships. I welcome you to the School and welcome your feedback on any aspect of our work or our website.
