Research

Research in the School reflects the dynamic, creative and technologically oriented nature of the areas of Design, Communication, IT and Natural History Illustration. In addition, we benefit from working across the disciplines in ways that enable more complex approaches to broader areas of study and practice such as multimedia.

The study of professional practices and the creative process is evident in a number of projects where we apply research methodologies such as ethnography, documentary, systems testing and experimental methods. At the honours level, application of reflective research methods and Practice Based Enquiry to creative work is has become increasingly popular in Communication, Design and Natural History Illustration projects.

Our teaching and research emphasises the multidisciplinary nature of our professions, and through interactions with industry our staff and students focus on 'real world' applications to their disciplines. We are leaders in the recognition and support of practice-based research in creativity, and creative endeavours. Further, our areas of research excellence are wide-ranging, and explore the important areas of image analysis and processing, and health informatics.

Our research students are invited to participate in an annual research Congress, which brings together the broad range of research subjects into a single platform, and is a stimulating opportunity for students to present their work to their peers, and to discover areas of commonality between disciplines.
