Why Study Natural History Illustration?

Natural History Illustration is a diverse discipline that brings together the subject areas of art, science and the environment. With the increasing international spotlight on environmental issues, there has never been a time when recorders and interpreters of the natural environment were most needed.

This discipline entails the use of an array of traditional and multi-media illustration techniques to visually record specimens in high fidelity. This commitment to anatomic accuracy provides much needed support to the biological sciences, facilitating in the communication of science to a wider audience.

The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle is the only one of its kind in Australia and offers a well-rounded programme through a combination of field and studio work. With an emphasis on paying meticulous attention to detail, our graduates are highly sought after and have gone on to win prestigious awards in illustration.

What will I study?

The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration is a specially tailored programme delivered through a series of studio studies and field trips. This hands-on approach prepares students for rewarding careers in areas related to museum work, medical illustration, archaeology, and environmental conservation.

Therefore, throughout the programme, students will learn to:

Develop field observation techniques
Illustrate using a range of painting and drawing mediums
Render anatomically accurate sketches
Use laboratory equipment as tools for observation
Photograph specimens
Identify flora and fauna
Ethically collect specimens from the field
Appreciate and understand regional biodiversity
Study habitats

Additionally, students will also be building up their own illustration portfolios throughout the programme, amassing a body of work that can be used to secure employment upon graduation.

Students interested in a career in academia will have the opportunity to develop their research skills and conduct their own original research through the Honours programme.
