Why study Information Technology?
Information Technology (IT) capabilities have become integral to every aspect of modern society, making it the backbone of a myriad of industries including business, science, communication and entertainment. This has opened up exciting new opportunities for IT graduates.
The Bachelor of Information Technology at the University of Newcastle is a broad-spectrum programme that encompasses the analysis, design, implementation, integration, maintenance and management of systems involving the application of IT. This programme is especially complementary to those who have an inquisitive mind, problem-solving skills and a thirst for pushing technological boundaries.
The courses are taught by academic staff with wide-ranging interests and industry experience, providing guidance on how the latest technology can be wisely deployed to build applications that suit the needs of potential clients.
Our graduates are technically savvy and creative. Many have found employment both nationally and internationally, and some have founded their own IT businesses.
What will I study?
The Information Technology degree programme is constantly reviewed by industry practitioners, including the Australian Computer Society, to ensure that coursework is practical, current and relevant.
Throughout the programme, students will learn to:
- Manage databases
- Develop software and information systems
- Design, analyse and implement systems
- Programme applications
- Conduct industrial research
- Utilize multimedia and animation software
- Design and create games
- Manage eBusinesses
Students also have access to PC and Mac laboratories and free wireless Internet, as well as video and audio editing suites. Further, students can download relevant software to their own laptops for free, enabling them to work on their assignments and projects away from the campus.
Students pursuing a career in academia or research will have the opportunity to develop their research skills and conduct their own original research through the Honours programme.

Industry Connections
The IT discipline works closely with businesses and the community, creating opportunities for student placements. Further, the Gosford City Council has donated 25 servers for student use, increasing the School’s data storage and management capacities.
