The University of Newcastle Jazz Orchestra

At the beginning of 2008 a new large music ensemble was established in the School of Drama, Fine Art and Music. The University of Newcastle Jazz Orchestra was formed by tertiary students and Lecturer in Brass, John Kellaway.

The Jazz Orchestra consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section and the occasional vocalist. The Orchestra plays a variety of music which currently includes Big Band standards. It is intended to expand its instrumentation to include many other types of music including world and contemporary music.

The Jazz Orchestra is the latest ensemble to be added to the growing list of music ensembles at the University of Newcastle and is an example of the growing diversity existing at the University which includes popular and jazz genres in the undergraduate degree programs.
