SURVEILLANCE & PERFORMANCE: Who's Watching Who?

2-6 October 2013

Creative and Performing Arts students from the School of Creative Arts present a festival of contemporary performance, engaging with the act of observing and being observed, surveillance and sousveillance.

Opening night is 2 October at 7PM at Watt Space, Auckland Street, Newcastle.

During the week there will be a variety of live performances, video footage from existing surveillance systems and performance installations including...

THE LOCKER ROOM

You Looking at Me: a durational performance installation exploring the act of observing, peep holes and Who is watching Who?

Solo: a series of solo performances of the people we meet.

THE LITTLE ROOM

Stories from the Street: a series of short narrative story-telling performances (probably 2x 30mins). Students create narratives and characters from the simple act of sitting in one place and 'watching the world go by'.

I See: a video performance of two visitors to an Art Gallery about the act of looking – filmed using an existing surveillance system in an Art Gallery setting.

Surveillance Camera Performances: a number of videos of the classics adapted and performed for surveillance cameras around Newcastle – including Waiting for Godot, Brief Encounter, The Chairs, Crime and Punishment.

THE MAIN ROOM

Lost in the Supermarket: a choreographed performance interacting with an in-store security system videoed using existing surveillance systems. Includes a live performance on opening night with remnants for rest of season, as well as videos, paintings and an interactive puzzle play set.

Its Not Me It's You: an audio work created spontaneously and gifted to the subject. A 'detective' follows a person and constructs a narrative of their journey and gives it to them.
