10 Years of Jenny Thomas Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to Skye Jacobson on being named the 2013 winner of the Jenny Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship. Jennie Thomas AM has been helping to make dreams come true for students of the University of Newcastle since 2003 and to celebrate this milestone anniversary a website has been set up to acknowledge her work and fortunate recipients. The school would like to congratulate all of the high achieving students who were awarded these scholarships in the past 10 years from Fine Art and Music.

Music At The Con

Another World of Popular Entertainments International Conference
The School of Creative Arts recently hosted the AWOPE International Conference on 12-14 June 2013. A diverse array of submissions were received from academics across the world including Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, UK, USA and Australia. Read More.

National Student Art Prize Winner

Conservatorium Expands into Opens in Maitland
Professor John Germov launched The Conservatorium’s Community Music Program in Maitland at its new campus at 301 High Street on May 19. Over 100 people attended and participated in various demonstration activities such as early childhood music, lessons and improvisations. The Maitland campus provides a venue and meeting place for the school and faculty and makes our community music programs far more accesible to the Hunter community. Echology UK Tour
Echology, (previously the University of Newcastle Chamber Choir) have recently returned from a successful tour of the UK. On this tour they performed in St Paul’s Cathedral in London during a recent tour of England. Choir Director, Dr Philip Matthias, said the Guild of Church Musicians had invited the choir to perform in Canterbury Cathedral to farewell the guild’s retiring general secretary. The choir also sang at a festival service in St Chad’s, Shrewsbury, at a concert at St Katharine Cree, London, in lunchtime concerts in Merton College, Oxford and St John’s College,
Cambridge as part of a concert series at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The new website for Echology will also be launched in July in the meantime read a full account of the trip on their blog (Click Here).

Public Talks Series: Screen & its Role in University Education
The School of Creative Arts hosted a series of public talks on various aspects of the Creative Arts and their relationship to university research and education. The first talk was a collaboration between Prof Richard Vella and Dr Marguerite Johnson (from HASS) titled The Politics of Knowledge: Plato, Socrates & Research. This talk will examine Plato's dialogue Ion in the context of current HERDC metrics followed by a dicussion on the beauty of Plato's writing, it's poetic imagination and its role in arguing the case for reason The 2nd talk was presented by Professor Jeff Jones from QUT and will discuss the implications of The Cube installation which is the heart of QUT's new $230million Science & Engineering Centre. Part science lab, part engagement, The Cube is the hub of scientific exploration for QUT students and the wider public.

"Going, Going, Gone" Fine Art Project
Students enrolled in the compressed delivery options for AART3462 (Photomedia) and AART3470 (Silver) undertook an external project in partnership with the Australian Wool Network. "Going, Going, Gone -- The Last Wool Sales in Newcastle" was conceived as a WiL project that offered students the opportunity to document all aspects of the last fine wool sale to be held in Newcastle after 70 years of tradition. Students photographed and intervied woolgrowers, buyers and officials including international guests from Italy. The outcome of this project will be an iBook and exhibition. Read More.

In an innovative pilot program a number of courses are being offered in a compressed delivery format in which the entire course workload will be completed in a intensive week-long course, thus freeing up valuable time for students fro the remainder of the semester. Demand for places has been so intense that many of these courses have filled up within minutes of opening for enrolments. Read More.
School Name Change
From the start of 2013 the School of Drama, Fine Art and Music (incorporating the Conservatorium) will be changing it's name to the School of Creative Arts to better reflect the new directions of our programs and the increasingly collaboration between our disciplins. Read More.
