This TIP will explore useful approaches to productively engage students in learning in both lectures and tutorials.
Student engagement is critical to learning in higher education.
Our memory is affected by how deeply we are able to process new knowledge. Simply listening, repeating or copying is insufficient for adequate learning.
To effectively learn, students must actively learn. They need to be able to think about the relationship of the idea to other concepts, to talk about it, to summarise, explain and question it.
In this TIP you will have the opportunity to learn more about effective and innovative practices which can improve students' engagement and participation in your subjects.
Whilst you watch the video, consider the following questions:
Basic Questions:
- What strategies do students suggest to increase participation in class?
- Based on your own experience, explain how have you (might you) positively encouraged your student to participate more actively in tutorials or lectures?
- What are effective ways to learn and remember names?
Extended Questions:
- Make a list of distinctive characteristics of your most liked or most effective teacher in regard to encouraging participation in class.
- How would you assess students’ contribution in class? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach?
