Unfortunately we didn't scoop the pool, as third place went outside our school, third place was awarded to Bernadette Drabsch. Perhaps next year our students will take out the top three spots during the UoN competition.

Meredith Kelleher, who won the Miltenyl Biotec Award for best student oral presentation (one of 3 Biotec sponsored awards) at the ASMR NSW Scientific meeting held on the 6 June. Her talk was titled “Progesterone Replacement Therapy & Brain Development in the Preterm Neonate”.

Emma Smith, was the NSW State winner for the Pharmacy Student of the Year, which was announced at the Pharmacy Expo.

Applying an ointment commonly used in angina treatment to snake bite wounds can improve survival times by up to 50 per cent according to latest research from the University of Newcastle.

Tony Quail, on winning the position of Conjoint Professor in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in the School of Medicine and Public Health. This will be a demanding role and we wish Tony all the best.

Natalie Beveridge, who has received an Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Fellowship. Additionally, Natalie received the ‘Fred Collins Award’ for the most outstanding ASMBM Fellowship application.

Robin Callister, who was the lead researcher on a grant awarded by BeyondBlue to investigate the effectiveness of exercise as a treatment for young people suffering depression.

Jay Horvat, who won the National Asthma Council's award for best presentation on asthma at the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand's annual meeting; Jay and colleagues also won the award for best poster on asthma and allergy.

Joerg Mattes, who was recently offered and has now accepted the Chair of Paediatrics in the School of Medicine. We are very sorry to lose Joerg from the School, but at least he isn’t moving far. Joerg has been a great contributor to the School; he has been very successful in both his research and his teaching, and has also worked very hard and effectively as a course coordinator and as a rep on the ACEC and the HREC. His lab will continue to be based at the DMB until everyone down there relocates to the New HMRI Bldg in 12 months time.

Feili Zhao, a PhD student with Shu Chuen Li, who won the Best Poster Award at the Australian Pharmaceutical Science Association Conference in Queensland in December. Feili’s paper will be published in the February issue of Australian Pharmacist.
More Success Stories for 2010 - Congratulations
Prof Leonie Ashman: Received the NUPSA award for RHD Supervisor of the Year.
Prof Trevor Day: "Professor Day has done an excellent job as Head of School, and we look forward to his continued leadership" stated Professor Nick Talley in an email to the school, when announcing that "following a review and consultation with staff" Trevor has been re-appointed as Head of School for the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy.
Prof Paul Foster: Received the 2010 Hunter Medical Researcher Institute Award for Research Excellence in recognition of his research in the area of asthma and allergies.
Prof Manohar Garg: Was the recent recipient of two awards - The 2010 Sukhatme Award from the International College of Nutrition in recognition of his outstanding research in the area of clinical nutrition, and The UoN Vice-Chancellor’s award for RHD Supervisor of the Year.
Dr Rebecca Lim: Was the recent recipient of two awards - “Best poster prize” at recent Frontiers in Otorhinolaryngology Conference Melbourne – July 28-30th 2010 (170 registrants), and “Young Scientist Scholarship” at 26th Barany Society Meeting, Reykjavik Iceland – August 18th – 21st 2010. The Barany society is the major International meeting for clinicians and basic scientists who are interested in vestibular system function and disease (350 registrants).
A/Prof Rohan Rasiah: Has been appointed as Deputy President (Teaching & Learning) of the Academic Senate.
Mr Adam Collison (PhD student with Joerg Mattes): Won the NSW AusBiotech-GSK Student Excellence Award, was then runner up in the national finals, and has now received the Newcastle Innovation Ltd Student Excellence Award for his research on asthma.
Ms Natalie Beveridge (PhD Student with Murray Cairns): Received a UoN Vice-Chancellor’s award for Research Excellence.
2011 Grants: With grants awarded to begin in 2011 where our staff are either the CI or a named investigator amounting to approximately $10M, the school is set to be very busy next year.

As many of you will be aware, several members of the School of Biomedical Sciences & Pharmacy have had success in being awarded Discovery Project Grants by the Australian Research Council:
Phil M Hansbro & Paul Foster (with Rakesh Kumar from UNSW) - Development of microbial bioproducts for the suppression of inflammation - Total of $285K over three years.
Keith T Jones (with Sergio Moreno from the Univ of Salamanca, and Eileen McLaughlin from SELS) - Gamete-specific knockout of Fizzy-Related to examine its meiotic role in oocytes and sperm - Total of $600K over four years.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Briggs who has taken out second place in the Three Minute Thesis trans-Tasman grand final, held in Queensland this week.
Congratulations - 3 Minute Thesis Winner - Gabrielle Briggs - 180 Seconds to Explain Parkinson's Disease
The Faculty of Health put forward 4 finalists to compete in the University final of the 3 Minute Thesis competition. While all Faculties were represented, Gabrielle Briggs from the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy won with her presentation "Regulation of Tyrosine Hydroxylase.. Gabrielle's supervisors are A/Prof Phil Dickson & Prof Peter Dunkley. Gabrielle will now go on to compete in the Inaugural Australia and New Zealand Competition in September.

Natalie Beveridge - Poster Prize at the Winter Conference on Brain Research in Breckenridge, Colorado. The poster was entitled "A Reduction of miR-17 Family Expression in Cultured Neuroblasts as a Hallmark of Their Transition Through Differentiation".
Divya Mehra - Two Poster Prizes for elucidating the mode of action of an effective anti-arrhythmic drug entitled “Flecainide Blocks Ca2+ Release Channels Associated with CPVT-Induced Cardiac Arrhythmias”. At the Australian Society for Biophysics and the Australian Neuroscience Society.
Melinda Phang - 2009 Nestlé Nutrition Institute Emerging Researcher Award. This was in recognition of her recent publication of a high quality, original research paper with outstanding implications and potential contributions to health, nutrition and prevention of thrombosis and related diseases.
Daniel Johnstone - 2009 Research Award from the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR).
Professor John Rostas - Awarded the ANS Medallion, and an Honorary Membership of the Australian Neuroscience Society (ANS) "for his contributions to neuroscience, including his six terms as ANS Editor and his continued activity in regional and national forums setting neuroscience research policy".

Gold Medal for Sarah - Last week (August 28th) Dr Sarah Gordon from the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy received the Gold Medal for Early Career Researchers based on her poster and oral presentations at the 22nd Biennial Meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry in Busan, Korea. Her paper entitled “Differential regulation of the two major isoforms of human tyrosine hydroxylase in situ” was selected by an international panel of judges.

2007's AUPS Conference held in Newcastle, awarded the Student Poster Prize to Mr Wayne Anderson (PhD Student from the Discipline of Anatomy in the School of Biomedical Sciences).

2007 Best of the Best Research Showcase
Congratulations goes to Susan Sullivan for winning first place for her Presentation "Structural plasticity of the neonatal brain in response to hypoxia" on Friday October 12th, in the 2007 Best of the Best Research Showcase.
Nikki Verrills Wins 2007 Eureka Prize
Along with Associate Professor Marie Kavallaris and Ms Sela Pouha at the Children's Cancer Institute, Nikki Verrills has won a prestigious 2007 Eureka Prize. The prize was awarded in the Research which Replaces the use of Animals or Animal Products category and was based upon their breakthrough development of new models of drug resistance within cancer cells in childhood leukemia. Using innovative differential proteomics their work promises new treatment approaches for drug resistant cancers. Fantastic stuff, Nikki.

The Cancer Institute Supports our Researchers
The Cancer Institute of NSW has awarded a Research Equipment Grants, for a new Cell Sorter, Dr Nikki Verrills is the lead CI. Dr Nikki Verrills, Professor Leonie Ashman and A/Professor Alistair Sim, are also partners with a NSW Cancer Proteomic Consortium that have been awarded over $1M, establishing them as partners with the APAF. Congratulations Nikki, Leonie & Alistair.
Research Grant Awarded
Meat & Livestock Australia has awarded A/Professor Manohar Garg (Nutraceutical Resarch Group, Biomedical Science), in association with Professor Andy Sinclair of Deakin University a grant amounting to $238,00 over two years for research into "Docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3) should be counted as a long-chain omega 3 fatty acid", for further information contact Manohar Garg.
Inaugrual Award for Outstanding Higher Research Candidates
Three students, including one investigating breast cancer development and progression, have been awarded an inaugural Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research Higher Degree Candidates at the University of Newcastle.
PhD candidate Lauren Cottrell's project involves investigating the role that a gene, called PP2A, plays in breast cancer. PP2A, and the protein it encodes, changes in many breast cancer cells but it is not known how the change controls cancer growth. Her research may lead to better treatments for breast cancer patients and improved rates of survival.

Drug Policy Expert Joins University
Shu Chuen Li, a pioneer in the field of pharmacoeconomics in Australia, has joined the University as a Professor of Pharmacy.
Professor Li has recently been appointed as Head of the Discipline of Pharmacy and Experimental Pharmacology at the University.
He was a key advisor to the Australian Government on the implementation of cost-effectiveness as a mandatory requirement for the inclusion of new drugs into the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

2006 Inaugural Research Higher Degree Student Supervisor of the Year Award
This award recognises outstanding achievement in training and mentorship of Research Higher Degree Students and carries a $1000 prize which is given as research allocation. It was presented at the Newcastle Postgraduate Students Association Dinner on the 17th of November.

2006 Teaching Award
At their Annual Dinner on the 17th November, the Newcastle University Postgraduate Student Association (NUPSA) announced the Recipients of the Supervisor of the Year Award (SOYA) and Teacher of the Year Award (TOYA) for 2006.
Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Schneider, lecturer in Pharmacy, Faculty of Health - winner of the Teacher of the Year Award.

New Frontiers in Parkinson's Disease Research (Wednesday 15 November 2006)
"University of Newcastle researchers are exploring new frontiers to develop better treatments for Parkinson's disease, a condition affecting around 100,000 Australians.
Dr Phillip Dickson and his team are looking at the two groups of cells and trying to understand why one group degenerates and the other does not."

2006-2007 HMRI Project Grants Awarded
"A record $340,000 raised from corporate and community donations to HMRI was awarded to Hunter researchers from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health at the HMRI Awards Night on November 8."
11 of the 19 grants awarded by HRMI were for Research Projects where Staff and Research Students from Biomedical Sciences are Chief Investigators.
PVC Health Awarded NH&MRC Program Grant
Professor Mike Calford (one of our Neuroscience Group Researchers) is a member of a team of investigators who have been awarded an NH&MRC Program Grant to operate through the University of Melbourne.
New Grants Awarded
Researchers in the School of Biomedical Sciences have been successful in obtaining 6 of the 16 new NH&MRC grants (37.5%) awarded to the University of Newcastle for the 3 year period commencing in 2007. These grants will bring $2,446,375 in funding to the School over the next 3 years.
In total, 26% of the applications submitted to the NH&MRC by researchers in our School were successful. In addition, 3 of our researchers are CI's on grants awarded to the School of Medicine and Population Health, and 2 are CI's on grants awarded to other Universities.

First Cohort to graduate from Master of Pharmacy
The University of Newcastle is playing an integral role in alleviating the national and regional shortage of Pharmacists with its first group from the Master of Pharmacy to graduate on Friday.
The University of Newcastle was the first university in Australia to introduce a graduate based program of Pharmacy.
Master of Pharmacy Program
