Why choose industrial design?
Virtually every manufactured product in the world is the result of the work of an Industrial Designer.
Industrial design is a creative profession that that creates the link between people and aspects of product that relate to human usage and behaviour and product appeal. Industrial designers (also known as product designers) develop products of optimal style and function that can be manufactured and be successful in the market. An industrial designer will work on everyday consumer products such as mobile phones, bicycles, toys and furniture as well as larger projects like cars, trains and heavy industries.
Be creating models and prototypes, the industrial designer can demonstrate and test their ideas and support their decision making process with drawings, illustrations and computer-aided-design models. They will select materials, assembly and manufacturing details and produce documentation for communicating with others involved in the product development process. Designers work mostly work as part of a product development team and liaise with specialists such as mechanical engineers and electronic designers.
This degree is a unique opportunity for students who have undertaken an Advanced Diploma in Product Design through TAFE NSW or equivalent to complete a university qualification.

What will I study?
This degree teaches core skills in the design and development of new products. Students will have the opportunity to self-direct their projects and the outcomes of their learning. Student will learn the importance of interacting with specialists in their projects and the qualities expected by industry. There are opportunities for projects with external manufacturers within our courses. Students will learn professional skills in management, research, design thinking, business administration, design for manufacture, marketing strategies and communication methods.
Career opportunities
Employment opportunities range from employment in large manufacturing companies working on the development of products, to smaller design consultancies for specialised projects. Graduates are employed in top local, national and international manufactures and consultancies.
What degrees can I study?
Admission is open only to applicants who have completed the requirements for an Advanced Diploma in Product Design and Development (TAFE NSW course code 7555) or an Advanced Diploma of Product Design and Innovation (TAFE NSW course code 19220) or an approved equivalent qualification from a recognised AQF provider. A minimum of the HSC (or equivalent) is required to apply to TAFE.
