Resident Architects

Newcastle architecture students have access to the best design minds in the country following the 2011 appointment of five leading Australian architects.

The five distinguished Professors are fully involved in design teaching at all levels in the school. They are both studio teachers in both the Bachelor and Master degrees and specialist mentors for students.

These internationally renowned architects are behind prestigious works including the Opera House, Olympic villages in Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London, the Brisbane Gallery of Modern Art, and extraordinary university buildings, woolsheds, apartments, and houses.

The five professional architects in residence are:

  • Lawrence Nield (Studio Nield, previously founding principal Bligh Voller Nield) is the architect for the University of the Sunshine Coast’s award winning library, and was responsible for major architecture and planning in four successive Olympic Games - Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London.
  • Kerry Clare and Lindsay Clare (Directors, Clare Design) husband and wife duo are winners of the Australian Institute of Architects 2010 Gold Medal and are designers of Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Other major works include the Cotton Tree Housing Estate, Maroochydore, and the Goetz house at Buderim.
  • Peter Stutchbury has designed many award winning buildings, including the Avalon House, the Bull's Run Woolshed, and the Nursing Faculty at University of Newcastle. He has been the recipient of 28 state and national awards, and has been widely exhibited internationally.
  • AIA Gold Medallist Richard Leplastrier has worked on the Sydney Opera House design with Jorn Utzon, and is known for his environmentally sustainable designs, particularly his prolific use of wood. With collaborators Peter Stutchbury and Sue Harper, Leplastrier designed the Birabhan Indigenous Centre at the University, and has also won the Finnish 'Spirit of Nature Wood' Award and the Dreyer Foundation Prize of Honour. Leplastrier’s other works include the Bellingen House and the Rainforest House.
