| Overview: | Professor David Powis was, until recently, Director of the Teaching & Learning Unit of the Faculty of Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and Assistant Dean, Teaching and Learning. He has worked extensively in the area of medical student selection to establish fair principles and appropriate strategy. In this context he has published many articles based on empirical data and has acted as a consultant for most of the medical schools in Australia, most of which now use a student selection strategy based on that developed at Newcastle. In the last five years David Powis (with Brooke Murphy) developed a structured interview for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for the purpose of selecting advanced surgical trainees, and conducted a review of the Graduate Medical Program of the University of Sydney (with Gregory Whelan). In 2000 - 2001 he conducted (with Naomi Norman) a detailed study of the process used for selecting medical students for the University of Oxford. In 2001 – 2002 he was project director of a team that conducted a review of the selection process for registrars for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and in 2002 (with John Marley, Brooke Murphy, Miles Bore and Don Munro) designed and implemented the procedure by which graduate doctors are selected for GP training. In 2001 David Powis was asked to assist with establishing a procedure to encourage increased participation of individuals from lower socio-economic groups in a new medical course being established at the University of Durham (UK); in this role he is occasional visiting professor at the University of Durham. Evidence-based selection procedures are the focus of David Powis' research, and articles published in this domain have been instrumental in bringing about change in medical student selection processes both in Australia and overseas. |
