The second NewMac Postgraduate Symposium on the Humanities was held at the University of Newcastle on Saturday 23 February 2008 (Macquarie University having hosted the inaugural symposium in 2007). There were 68 registrations, 41 from Newcastle, 19 from Macquarie University, a few from other universities (UWS, UTS, UNE), and some not affiliated. After an opening address by Professor Scott Holmes, Dean of Graduate Studies, eighteen papers were delivered in two parallel sessions. The papers covered a range of disciplines:

Participants rated the event highly and found it a satisfying and stimulating day. Congratulations to the NewMac 2008 Organizing Committee - Peter Bower, Patrick Bryson, Sarah Minslow, Danuta Raine, Sandra Reeves - whose hard work and meticulous planning laid the groundwork for the symposium's success.

The Editorial Committee for Humanity, the NewMac Symposium’s online journal, will be busy over the following months few months editing the papers from the symposium for publication. This year Humanity will also include fully refereed and peer-reviewed papers on the conference theme of ‘Truth and Artifice’ in addition to those papers presented at the conference. Students wishing to submit papers for consideration should send a complete draft of their paper, together with an abstract of no more than 200 words, to NewMacSymposium@gmail.com. The deadline is 15 April 2008.

As well as providing a forum for postgraduate research in the Humanities, the journal aims to develop editorial, reviewing, and submission skills within the postgraduate community of the universities involved in NewMac (the University of Newcastle, Macquarie University, and the University of Western Sydney). Research Higher Degree students interested in participating as co-editors and referees should contact Danuta Raine at Danuta.Raine@studentmail.newcastle.edu.au.
