These scholarships have been established by Ms Jennie Thomas in 2015 to assist academically capable students who are facing disadvantage. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be facing at least one aspect of educational disadvantage such as financial hardship, coming from a regional or remote area, long-term medical condition/disability, refugee status, carer or sole parenting responsibilities.

Jennie Thomas, an alumnus, is a long term donor to this University and its students. She has generously funded numerous scholarships across a range of Faculties since 2001, including Art, Music and Environment. She believes in the mentorship of her scholars as they follow their dreams.

Applicable to: Commencing and Continuing, educational disadvantage, financial disadvantage, High Achievers, Australian Citizens, Permanent Residents, and International students.


To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Newcastle.
  • Be enrolled full-time.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement or potential either by an ATAR of 75 or higher for commencing students, or GPA of 5.0 for continuing students
  • Demonstrate that the ability to study is affected, or will be affected, by an area of educational disadvantage such as exceptional financial hardship, relocation, carer or parenting responsibilities, long term medical condition or recurrent illness.
  • Not be the recipient of another UoN Donor funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

This scholarship will provide a benefit of $4000 paid following selection and after semester 1 census date.


Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents. The selection committee may choose to interview applicants.
