EstablishmentThis scholarship was established in 2001, from a trust fund established in memory of Koiki Eddie Mabo. This fund was graciously established by Roger Riordan, Director of the computer virus detection company, Cybec Pty Ltd.

The aim is to provide a scholarship fund that can be used for the purpose of assisting any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, who are studying in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at the University of Newcastle.

Applicable to: Medicine, Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Midwifery, Occuptation Therapy, Heath Science, Medical Radiation, Nutrition, Dietetics, Oral Health, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Indigenous, ATSI students.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in any year of any undergraduate program within the Faculty of Health
  • Be enrolled full-time
  • Identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be recognised as such by your community
Required Documentation

  • A 750 word essay on the topic: "How will you contribute to improving Aboriginal Health as a qualified practitioner and how will the Koiki Eddie Mabo Scholarship assist you in your studies at the University of Newcastle?"
  • A Confirmation of Aboriginality (Common Seal) and a written reference made by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community member who knows you in the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community
Benefit

One (1) scholarship is available, payable as annual installments of $5000 for a period of up to five (5) years, subject to annual review of the scholar's academic progress.

Selection

Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit and assessment of the required essay.
