This scholarship was established by friends and colleagues, and is supported by the family of the late Dr Pat Stevens, to commemorate in perpetuity the work of this highly regarded individual. Dr Stevens was a long serving local GP and was involved in a wide range of sporting, cultural and medical activities. He was much loved and admired by his many friends, his family, colleagues, and patients and is greatly missed.

The scholarship is to support a student who is from the Great Lakes, Gloucester, and Greater Taree Council Areas who is studying the Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle and who is financially or socially disadvantaged.

The scholarship will ideally support a commencing student from the region who intends to return to work in the region, however will also be open to students who have completed, or will complete, a placement within the Manning Region, as part of their B Medicine program with University of Newcastle.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine program in the Faculty of Health and Medicine, UON.
  • Be enrolled full-time (minimum 30 units).
  • Be a resident from, or have lived in, the Great Lakes, Gloucester, or Greater Taree City Council areas OR undertake placement in the Manning Region as part of the B Medicine program with UON.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 75 or higher.
  • Demonstrate that the ability to study is affected, or will be affected, by an area of educational disadvantage such as financial/social hardship or Regional or remote disadvantage.
  • Be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Not be the recipient of another UoN Donor funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

  • A written statement outlining your experience of financial disadvantage, how this scholarship would assist you, reasons for studying this degree, career aspirations, and any plans to return to your local area after study.

The scholarship provides a benefit of $2,500 per annum to be paid as a lump sum following each Semester 1 census date.

The scholarship is ongoing for up to five years of full-time study in the Bachelor of Medicine program with UON.


Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents. Preference will be given to commencing students who have resided in the Great Lakes, Gloucester, or Greater Taree areas.
