Establishment
These scholarships were established from the estate of the first Professor of French, Professor Kelver Hartley, at the University of Newcastle to promote the study of French and to assist students in this endeavour. Funding is derived from the Hartley Bequest administered by the executors, the Perpetual Trustees.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in a French (Honours) program
- Be enrolled full-time.

After you have submitted your application, please print off the cover sheet provided and attach a copy of each piece of required documentation to it before sending in.
Provide a written statement (one A4 page) outlining your honours research topic
Benefit
Up to five (5) scholarships will be offered annually. The scholarship provides $4000 to be paid in two payments of $2000 each after the census date each semester. An additional amount of up to $1000 to support relocation to the University of Newcastle may be available upon written request to the Hartley Awards Committee.
Selection
Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit, including performance in French courses, along with a written statement outlining the applicant¿s honours research topic.
