Nina Doratis Scholarship for Strings

Establishment

This scholarship was established by Mrs Zeny Giles in memory of her mother, Mrs Nina Doratis. It is designed to help young musicians who show significant strings ability and musicianship to further their potential.

Nina Doratis migrated as an eight year old form the Greek island of Castellorizo arriving in Sydney in 1924. Forced to leave school at the age of eleven, she was determined that her own children would have a good education. As a lover of music she also encouraged her children to play musical instruments. Later in life one of her joys was to listen to three of her grandchildren practise the violin as student of the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.
