Establishment

These scholarships were established from the estate of the first Professor of French, Professor Kelver Hartley, at the University of Newcastle to promote the study of French and to assist students in this endeavour. Funding is derived from the Hartley Bequest administered by the executors, the Perpetual Trustees. The aim of the Kelver Hartley Grants in Aid is to enable students enrolled in a higher degree at the University of Newcastle in French to pursue part of their candidature in a French speaking country.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in either a masters or doctoral research program in French
  • Be an Australian Citizen or Be a New Zealand Citizen or Be a Permanent Resident

Required Documentation

If this documentation is not provided your application will not be processed.

After you have submitted your application, please print off the cover sheet provided and attach a copy of each piece of required documentation to it before sending in.

Provide an outline of the area of your research, the progress made to date, the specified nature of the research to be undertaken in a French speaking country and why it would be advantageous to complete the research overseas rather than in Australia.

Benefit

The grant will include return airfares to the chosen French speaking country and assistance towards living expenses including meeting the cost of accommodation of a reasonable standard.

Selection

Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit and relevance of proposed program to the higher degree. Successful applicants would normally be expected to stay for approximately 3 months; however, a period of 6 months will be considered. Successful applicants will also be required to maintain their enrolment at the University of Newcastle throughout their higher degree.
