|Establishment||This scholarship was established to commemorate Irena's life and academic achievements and assist other students of non-English speaking backgrounds who have completed the Open Foundation or Newstep program and are enrolled in the University of Newcastle. It is a scholarship established in perpetuity made possible through the generous support of staff and members of the community to the Irena Ivanovic-Howley Scholarship Fund. |
Irena was born in Bosnia. Following the war, she immigrated to Australia with her family and in the same year, enrolled in Open Foundation at the University of Newcastle. As her familiarity with the English language improved, her academic abilities shone through. She received first class Honours in Commerce, won awards and was appointed a Lecturer in Finance in the Newcastle Business School at the University of Newcastle. Irena died in 2005 following a short battle with cancer. Although her life was short she inspired many.

Provide a one (1) page statement outlining why you believe you should receive this scholarship.
Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit, namely Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and a one (1) page statement outlining why applicant believes they should be granted the scholarship. Interviews between nominated applicants and the selection committee will be arranged in the event of equal ranking.
