Supervision

This website provides information on the University of Newcastle Supervisor Workshop Series and links to internal and external resources to assist supervisors to develop an understanding of student needs and supervisory expectations and responsibilities.

One of the University of Newcastle’s strategic goals is to enhance research training. To meet such a goal requires an active and flexible program of supervisor development that accommodates new supervisors and experienced ones, and which draws on local as well as external expertise.

The Supervisor Workshops Series draws on visitors and local expertise to provide support for supervisors, delivering up-to-date, empirically grounded, information and providing access to best practice.

There is now a significant international literature on Research Training and Supervision, and national and international networks of researchers in the field. The national body, the Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies produce policy and position papers that also can be used to guide supervision practice. The University also subscribes to the fIRST website that provides resources for both supervisors and research students.
