After completing the application form, gain approval from your supervisor, Head of School and Assistant Dean. Please note that applications for leave of absence may only be considered after one full-time or two part-time years of candidature and applications must be finalised prior to the semester census dates (31 March for Semester One and 31 August for Semester Two).
Should you wish to change your school of registration please write to the Office of Graduate Studies requesting to change schools and provide a copy of your Research Proposal. Requirements for upgrade vary between faculties. Application should be made at least two semesters prior to the end of your current candidature. Complete the Application for Transfer from Masters Degree to Doctor of Philosophy form. Should you wish to upgrade to a PhD complete the application form, gain approval from your supervisor, Head of School and Assistant Dean. Please note that upgrade applications must be finalised prior to the semester census dates.
The Office of Graduate Studies will contact you prior to your expected return with re-enrolment advice. You will need to re-enrol at myHub. Information on online re-enrolment is available from the RHD Student Self Service web page.
Consult with your supervisor, then complete the application form which requires the approval of the Head of School and Assistant Dean Research Training. You are also required to provide the necessary justifications and a plan for completing your studies. You should also contact the Office of Graduate Studies to check on any financial or other implications of extending your candidature.
Candidates are required to re-enrol in Semester 1 and Semester 2 every year unless they take approved leave of absence or withdraw from candidature. They are also required to re-enrol on return from leave of absence. It is an individual responsibility to check ‘myHub’ each semester to ensure that enrolment and personal details are correct and to pay any student fees or charges. If you live or work outside a 50km radius of the campus of enrolment you may seek off-campus enrolment. Complete the form at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/research/rhd/forms.html and provide the necessary details.

Similarly, the University, Faculties and supervisors undertake certain obligations in relation to RHD candidature. Applications for scholarship close at the end of August for international students and at the end of October for domestic scholarships. Application information is available from the Office of Graduate Studies.
Scholarship application outcomes are usually known in December of each year.
Please complete the Request for Scholarship Extension Form. Scholarship extensions are not available for UNRSC scholarships. APAs and EIPRS scholarships can only be extended if the reason is research related and beyond the control of the candidate. UNRSE scholarships can only be extended if there is funding available. For UNRSE scholarships, please discuss the possibility of a scholarship extension with your supervisor.
