CURRENT ERA NEWS
On the 6th of December the ARC announced the results of the second round of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment exercise. The high quality of research at The University of Newcastle has been well recognised with the University being awarded 18 ratings at the highest level 5 'well above world standard' in the four digit filed of research classifications and an additional 3 ratings of "5" at the broader two digit field of research level. The University was assessed in 49 four digit fields of research with 90% of our codes being rated at world standard ("3") or above.

The University’s research performance places Newcastle amongst the best in Australia –
- The top 2 in Engineering; the top 4 in Mathematics; the top 5 in Medical and Health Sciences; and the top 7 in Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences.
- Excellence from A to Z –
- 44 fields of research were rated at world standard or better covering areas as diverse as Accounting, Auditing and Accountability through to Zoology.
- 18 fields of research were rated as being 5 – Well above world standard.
- A further 9 fields of research were rated as being 4 - Above world standard.
- A total of 27 fields of research were rated as being 4 - Above world standard or 5 – Well above world standard.
- Alignment of strengths –
- A perfect score was achieved by the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources – ratings of 5 – Well above world standard for all six fields of research core to their mission.
- The Hunter Medical Research Institute achieved an average rating of 4.3 across the 18 fields of research core to their mission.
- All 15 University Priority Research Centres were rated at world standard or better in their fields of research.
- Research quality unequaled in Australia
- The University of Newcastle has the only 5 – Well above world standard rated social work group in the country.
- The University of Newcastle is the only institution to be rated 5 – Well above world standard in ERA 2010 and ERA 2012 in Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics.
