High Performance Computing at Newcastle

In addition to its extensive on-campus computing capacity, the University can arrange access to two major supercomputing facilities:

Australian Centre for Advanced Computing and Communication (ac3).

Technical details of the computing resources available from this Centre are provided at the ac3 web site. The ac3 staff provide an introduction to high performance computing, the research circumstances it is suitable for and provide expert advice on choosing the appropriate ac3 superbox for the task at hand.

The University of Newcastle has been allocated 42k System Units per year for its strategic use. The priorities for the use of this resource are set out in the strategic allocation policy.

The ac3 guidelines and application form provide further information.

When the University has used its ac3 strategic allocation, researchers can apply direct to ac3 for access on a merit application. Information about the selection criteria, selection procedures and application forms are available in the Guidelines.

Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (APAC)

The APAC consortium also provides supercomputing access via their merit application scheme. APAC also has web based HPC educational programs and from time to time puts on workshops at this University.

Usually when such workshops are available or when there are calls for merit applications there will be announcements in the University’s email bulletin service (Dot Pointers) and email messages to Heads of Schools.

The APAC guidelines and application form provide further information.

University Supercomputing Committee

Access to the ac3 and APAC supercomputing facilities is managed through the University’s Supercomputing Committee.
